1957,in Ebutte Metta Lagos State,to the Oniga family of Eku Community in Agbon Kingdom,one of the Urhobo kingdoms in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.She attended primary school in Abule Oja Lagos and secondary school in Edo state.Thereafter,got her first degree in computer programming from the prestigious university of Lagos.
Growing up as a child,her dream was to be a singer and dancer,which she does passionately in her early years.Rachel Oniga picked up a challenged of working to be a great and successful woman,after a divorce in early 90s from her trusted husband,who left her for another woman.She worked briefly with Ascoline Nigeria Limited,a Dutch consultant company and started her acting career way back 1993.
Her first movie was titled"Onome",and debut Yoruba movie was "Owo Blow".She came to limelight and became a celebrity after featuring in the Nollywood blackbuster movie titled "Memorial Hospital"where she played the role of a "patient"all these was her very first year in the industry in 1993.
Since then,she has featured in over 200 Nollywood movies and television series, including;Sango,Out of Bounds,Passion of mind,power of sin, Restless Mind,Doctor Bello,30 Days in Atlanta,senator,Kada River,Agony of a Mother,Died wretched,The only Nigerian Girl,Super story television series e.t.c
Rachel Oniga highly gifted, intelligent and versatile,fit into any character.This is why she acts in English and Yoruba speaking movies.Notwithstanding,she is also an aspiring movie producer.She produced her first film "True or False"a movie about Abiku/Ogbanje in 2005,EbonyLife,The Royal Hotel Hibiscus,which debuted in Cinemas in February 2018 and "Kada River".
She has received several awards over the years, including;a lifetime award for Best Supporting Actress at the Africa Magic viewers chioce Awards,Best Indigenous Actress(Yoruba)at the Best of Nollywood Awards,Most promising Actress in Nigeria at the City People Entertainment Awards and Best Actress in a Television/Drama at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
Additionally,with the Urhobo DNA in her blood,she wrote her name in gold,by conducting one of the freest election in history of Nollywood that produced Ibinabo Fiberesima as the first female president of the Actors Guilt of Nigeria(AGN),the umbrella body of actors and actresses in Nigeria.This is an attestation to her well dignified character,virtue and integrity, announcing the result even in the face of intimidation as secretary of the Electoral Committee in 2012.
She is a woman of valour and true Nollywood women mirror in Urhobo nation.Also,a proud mother of three,and grandmother who dressed decently and elegantly.She refused to remarry since divorced, making sure her Children gets a better life.
