School of Vocational Education,Delta State College of Education Mosogar in collaboration with Department of Vocational and Technical Education, University of Benin, Benin-City held 1st Annual International Conference and Exhibition at the College on Wednesday 27th November,2024.
The conference with the theme "Socioeconomic Transformation: Innovation in Vocational and Technical Education, was attended by various scholars, educators, innovators and students who gathered to share a common goal to unlock the transformative potential of Vocational Education in shaping the future of our societies and economy.
In his welcome address,the Provost of the College,Dr. Israel Imide who was ably represented by the Director of Academic Planning,Dr. Moses Ossai,welcome everyone, while he commended the organizers for the topic which is a critical tool to addressing pressing societal challenges face today in Nigeria.
In his opening address,the Dean, School of Vocational Education,Dr. Abel Ayo asserted that Vocational and Technical Education has metamorphosed in the cornerstone of economic development, adding that, it provides young people and adult (alike) learners with the practical skills salient for entrance and success in the world of work.He further task everyone to keep in mind that the role of vocational and technical education extends far beyond training a skilled workforce.It is about shaping a future where every individual has the opportunity to architect their own future, equipped with the tools, knowledge and creativities to build a better world.
In his keynote address,Prof. Canice N. Ikeoji of the Delta State University Abraka, affirmed that the theme could not have come at a better period than now when the world is critically challenged by issues of social and economic dimensions especially in the educational system and particularly in Vocational and Technical Education.He therefore thanked the organizers of the conference for their thoughtfulness and sense of purpose exhibited in the build up to the conference,while adding that Nigeria is at a critical stage of its development,struggling with so many developmental challenges.He further suggested that Nigeria and other developing nations in consideration of a variety of social challenges,can combine social innovation, technology innovation and sustainability to achieve a transformative sustainability, stressing that a critical area where social innovation can be harnessed with a good promise of success is in the area of Vocational and Technical Education.
Prof. Patrick E. Egbule from the Department of Technical Education, Agricultural Science Unit,Delta State University Abraka,who is the lead paper presenter, stressed the importance of collaboration and partnership of Vocational and Technical educators among themselves, industries, technology developers , Government and Non-government bodies and other stakeholders.He further advocates theoretical -Practical approach in the teaching of VTE, curriculum review to fit into the current social reality amongst others.
Highlight of the conference was the exhibition of various arts,farm produce and home economics work produced by Lecturers and Students in the school of Vocational Education,Delta State College of Education Mosogar.
The school of Vocational Education is made up of Business Education, Agricultural Science Education and Home Economics Education.
